In contrast to "The Rememberer"

Reading "The Red Fox Fur Coat" felt like the universe was speaking directly to me. I totally understood that whole story, from the urgency, the desires and impulses of the character, to the theme of allowing nature to reclaim itself. The character- the mousy accountant or whatever- focuses all of her intent into the fox coat, which leads ultimately to her shapeshifting into one. That it was a fox gives the story even more power. I cherish foxes and their playfulness greatly, as I feel strongly connected to them. I see so much acute alertness in them, which I think the story accurately reflected in its own fabric. It was both sweet and gritty.

  1. Nice connection between these two stories, Stacey. You're right, "The Rememberer" seems to be disconnected from nature somehow (the narrator hides this behind humor), but "Fox Coat"'s protag embraces nature and evolves.
