the cacophony of Laramie

I think the play does a great job of recreating the cacophony of discussion about violence against gays and hate crime legislation. There is a lot of talking about "not believing" in the "lifestyle" which, I suspect, misses the point. Also, people, like Sherry Johnson say that all crimes are hate crimes (like "all lives matter" vs. "black lives matter") which is like changing the subject. (Also, it's pretty irrelevant whether Matthew had HIV or "came onto" his murderers.) Despite the "objective" nature of the play, I think it does a pretty good job of making some arguments: 1) This hate crime tore apart this community, 2) It also brought them together, 3) Decency won out over ugliness/intolerance, 4) But people are still pretty close minded. Actually, I guess, the play doesn't make a coherent argument, but maybe that's not what art is supposed to do?

  1. When people talk about living a certain lifestyle, it is not necessarily true. A girl can go out every weekend to party, not just to pick up guys as society would think of, but maybe that is her way of unwinding or getting away from whatever tension she's facing. It is like an escape for her but yet society cannot see that that is the reason why she is doing what she is doing. Not because we live a certain lifestyle it give people the right to judge us. Some things can either break you or make you as per what you said about a community tore apart and also brought them together. I think if a lot of people were more open minded and view scenarios from both point of views, they can either agree or disagree with it or say that both sides were at fault instead of being completely bias to something we do not approve of. This is a major problem in our society today. Because we disapprove of something, means we completely hate it and will not stand for it at all. That is the mentality of today's society. But being open minded and being able to understand different perspective, is what might sustain the peace among us. Everyone has a choice as to how they live their live. And we as a society should respect that and focus on our lives instead of others.
