My interpretation of this stanza is that back in the day from when he was experiencing his childhood these people community that he was nearby had a certain vibe or “radiance” that came from the people near this stained-glass chapel by the dorm. The students had a sort of way of living as if in “Code”. He talks of the girls that, from far away, are now turning sixty.
I guess what he was trying to get at was the difference that the Chapel/Dormitory had given light to. The "folk" flare he speaks of makes me feel as if it wasn't the norm for him and had shown him a different side of the neighborhood.
