The reason I chose to write briefly about this poem is because it stood out to me, the way that the author cleverly speaks about certain thoughts or ideas he may have that are coming from a dark [place. You may not catch on to it in the beginning but after reading it a second or third time you see how raw the piece truly is. In the beginning it seems as if he is trying to understand himself and how he should be perceived in society and I think that his mom m,ay have been his role model but her being a woman is a reason why he couldn't imitate her. I say that because in a later stanza he says "I felt as incorrect playing baseball as a bear cub moving in with a family of turtles." He clearly feels out of place and is trying to express himself , he knew he was different from the other boys around him and that uniqueness really made him a stick out.
I now think, they knew
better and hoped
better and hoped
that by attacking
and shaming the fear
resident in me,
and shaming the fear
resident in me,
in my self, they might
drive away the dark
within theirs.
drive away the dark
within theirs.
This was one of stanzas that stuck out to me
