This week I found myself in a situation where I had to talk a teenaged student of mine off an emotional ledge. She has suffered from traumatic experiences over the course of the past year, in turn causing her to sometimes struggle with emotional outbursts.

She asked me, “When does a loss stop making you feel so lost?”.

My response following a question of such enormous intensity was, “The answer isn’t all that simple. The pain you feel will one day feel less consuming. One day you’ll wake up and it will simply hurt less than it did the day before. That doesn’t mean you won’t come across reminders of that experience, throughout life you’ll always find resemblance in things that may bring you back to this place. It’s allowed to find yourself knocked down-growth, and acceptance come when you remember to get back up. It’s always okay to be sad or to lose sight of your path, as long as you always find your way back.”

Later that day when I finally had a moment to myself my words echoed in my head and resonated in a place within myself that left me feeling inspired.

Have you ever spoken something to someone that resonated within yourself?

  2. It does happen to me. And it's because inspiring others always comes back to my mind. Encouragement is a great way to inspire others. We should never give up on ourselves. Life is filled with great stuff.

  3. Thanks for sharing, Chelsea. Isn't it amazing the poetry that we confront in a daily fashion? The statement “When does a loss stop making you feel so lost?” is beautiful and catches what it feels like to be in emotional pain.
