Welcome to the blog for Prof. John Talbird's English 220 class. The purpose of this site is two-fold: 1) to continue the conversations we start in class (or to start conversations before we get to class) and 2) to practice our writing, reading, and thinking on a weekly basis in an informal setting.

social issue: mental health
A social issue that I feel strongly about right now is the platform on mental health. It's a pressing issue I guess I'm learning about right now in a few of my classes and its been topic of discussion in media when the current president's mental health came in to question. I feel like this issue isn't talked about enough and that when it is spoken on that it isn't done with a broad perspective. The narrative is usually more about the extreme disorders when many people that look like they are functioning are also dealing with things. I feel like the education system has failed to teach us about our mental health and that we only know the disorders but not ways to cope and to prevent. The reason why I felt so strongly about this issue is that one my best friends has been depressed for a long time and unfortunately, I wasn't able to be there for her, I had no understanding of what the disorder is and what mechanisms we can use to help loved ones cope. You might say that there is a system to tackle this issue, however, that system is rigged with who and how people get access. the ones that need it have Medicaid and are not able to get adequate help and its tough to find psychologists who take Medicaid and are good.
