Welcome to the blog for Prof. John Talbird's English 220 class. The purpose of this site is two-fold: 1) to continue the conversations we start in class (or to start conversations before we get to class) and 2) to practice our writing, reading, and thinking on a weekly basis in an informal setting.

My take on social issues
Hi there! Sorry for the lateness! I get that I'm a week late when it came to this topic. I sent a post in class but apparently either God or that computer I was using hated me. Meaning, it failed to even send. Worse, I didn't write it down so I had to restart from scratch. It's hard, You know when you forget just about everything right after finishing an exam? Well yeah, that was what happened to me. Anyways, here's my thoughts on that whole social issues thing we discussed in class.

You know, there’s something beautiful about all of us talking about these social issues. It helps one understand what type of individual that the person in question is. Though it can only seen by those that actually care enough to look deeper than what’s necessary for him/her.
ReplyDeleteSeeing a person talk about a social issue that concerns him enables all of us to understand what bothers him, it makes us think of how this issue impacted his life enough for him to speak out about it. It also, from one perspective, enables us to understand to what degree that the individual is ignorant, and to what issues that he may be ignorant of or perhaps underestimating such significance. You may complain about a law where transgenders will lose their recognition of being identified as their own gender, whereas one will complain about the genocide that’s been occurring in a nation such as Myanmar. Even if we share the same concerns about the same issue, It enables us to understand newer ways we never looked at before, leading us to say “Huh, I never thought of it that way”. Interesting, huh?
From the accumulation of my experiences, having my mindset twisted and purified (back and forth, at that) through many good and bad moments in time, I’ve come to the conclusion that the social issue that I worry about is one that affects all of humanity rather than a specific part of it, like a race or a gender. In another way of saying this, it means that I simultaneously disagree and agree with each and every one of you when it comes to your social issues. Though I can only aspire to understand how you feel since it takes an entire lifetime as well as having the exact factors (example: your mindset, in which how transforms whenever it did. The environment that you lived with throughout the entirety of your life) to truly comprehend with how you think such issues deserve top priority. Since I’m a Muslim (in-name, I guess), I could’ve simply said that the discrimination, prejudice, as well as racism shown towards any individuals of Islamic faith should be an social issue to focus on. However, I don’t think it’s worth discussing as it will lead to newer problems, which may become a hindrance towards another group of people. The same issue will start, but with a different group of victims to suffer that same issue that Muslims suffered, like the Christians.
In the end, all issues that we have all mentioned and cared about in class are nothing but issues that were both the result of previous issues as well as issues that will lead to newer issues. It’s something that involved in one concept, an important one that we identify as chain reactions. Everything is somehow connected, the same applies to our issues. If one issue is resolved, it always caused more problems than we care to acknowledge. Such as a nation accepting immigrants from war-torn countries end up taking jobs from other people that are actually citizens of that very nation, just an example. I think it’s important that we work together to find a way to solve an issue without it being a hindrance to other people. On the long run, that person that was being bothered by the resolutions we make may someday fuck up our lives, all for the sake of making a resolution that solves his own issue. We’re just screwing each other’s asses up while being screwed as well, kind of like an orgy. We can care about our issues, but what about the issues of others? It’s because that we don’t care about them that they end up having to look after themselves, just like what we’re doing. It’s easier to understand by saying that we’re living in a world where it’s every group for themselves. Like, “if women want to do something about rape, then it’s on them to care about it, I got my own problems to take care of”. This right here, is what’s probably going on. Correct me if I’m wrong.
DeleteSo, would that mean we should stop caring about our respective issues and start focusing on others? Nope. It’s great that there’s always a particular amount of people that cares about something for everything. There’ll always be people caring about the issues of the environment, the economy, the Jews, the Muslims, the gays, and etc.
I just wanted to think of an issue that can create an umbrella that could cover all other issues in the world, even environmental. So what I end up thinking are Human Rights, I hope that this is accurate.
(This is what I tried to send after our class discussion)
DeleteThere are a lot of issues in this world that I want to address. So it’s hard to find or described an issue that would somehow include all these other issues that I wish to talk about. Maybe I’ll try my luck with human rights, if that’s even accurate.
Under this particular issue, it may address the inequality between humans, the suffering of both black and white-skinned resident of Africa (particularly South Africa), hatred and violence against Muslims, the future of the colored citizens of America, the political battle with democrats and republicans, and so much more. I’m not sure if I correctly grasped the concept of the topic required, so feel free to correct me.
I know that this is quite a vague and wide issue to choose, but that’s exactly why I chose it. Now for guys like me, I would focus on a topic that’s more relevant with my life like the issue related to Muslims. However, over the course of my life, I realize that problems will continue to arise unless all issues were tended to. Focusing on one and than the other will lead to a situation we have now: with one group of people pleased while the other still displeased.
