Welcome to the blog for Prof. John Talbird's English 220 class. The purpose of this site is two-fold: 1) to continue the conversations we start in class (or to start conversations before we get to class) and 2) to practice our writing, reading, and thinking on a weekly basis in an informal setting.

My perspective
While reading this play it drove me to think about how many have had to deal with being one of the first people doing anything against societal norms must have felt. At one point marrying people outside your socioeconomic class was wrong, being with someone outside of your race was wrong, being with someone of the same sex, and someone outside of the same religion There are so many people who have been persecuted for stepping outside of these social norms and many have died for it. The play is really interesting because it shows the dimensions of people who were out and still inside the closet and it just gives us a different perspective. I even think about how long ago this incident took place and still how relevant it is. I think our generation is more conscious of what's going on in the world around them and that we as a whole are more tolerant and nonchalant about what others want to do. There are many movies coming out this year that speak on the injustices that have taken place and I think that this play won't lose relevance to those in the gay community or not because you can look at it from the perspective of being one of the first...
