Genre Switch Ideas

Hi all,

Have any of you had issues with changing the structure of your writing from your usual way to one that's way less comfortable for you? For instance, for the past few years my writing has taken the shape of a stream of fast, cathartic poems that I write when I need to express particular emotions verbally. They are powerful, and I love them, so I don't really feel like writing in any other way. It's very intuitive for me- writing has always been, and with poems, I enjoy being mostly passive in the process. Plus my attention span is short : ) However, a requirement of the collection assignment is that we write in two or more different genres. Additionally, I'd love to use this class to help me expand into something other than my usual way- I think it'd help me gain discipline in my writing.
I remember when I used to spend so much of my time writing short stories/flash fiction, and I really miss my dedication. This might feel uncomfortable for me- I imagine along the way there'll be parts of the assignment that'll speak to us all like that (if you're nodding, share if you'd like to). Do any of you have ideas for making the switch?

See you all Wednesday,
Stacey

  1. Hey Stacey, I really get what you are going through I think when you have a particular style of writing its hard to kind of get out of those ways because it's truly about the comfort. I am used to writing within a structure and being able to write within that and the whole concept of writing about whatever you want seems easy but its a little tough for me. The way I went about it is by looking into creative writing exercises and just writing a short story with the prompts. It seems like you have a little structure but truly its whatever you want to pour on your canvas with a few pointers. It can be a great start for you as I felt it was for me.

  2. HI Stacey
I think we all have a comfortable style of writing rather it be poetry, short stories or anything else. I usually like to write about experience and things that I want to happen in the future. And I express that in poetry and short stories. I wouldn't change the way I write but I would add to what makes you comfortable and try to expand that and make it work in a piece of writing that fits another genre.
